Travel is a great way to explore your sense of self. It took me a while to understand that statement. But when I started visiting dozens of new countries, it didn’t take long for my life to change for the better.

How? Traveling the world made me more confident. It taught me to see things from a new perspective and adopt an entirely different way of thinking.

So if you want to increase your confidence, below are several ways that traveling the world will make that a reality. It’s something that improved every aspect of my life, and I’m sure it will do the same for you.

Here’s how:

You’ll Learn How To Overcome Adversity.

When you travel around the world, things will inevitably go wrong. For example, your plane might get delayed, your luggage may get lost, and many other things will happen that you cannot control. But like the Roman philosopher, Seneca once said:

“A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials.”

When I had my suitcase stolen in Malaysia, I was upset. However, that event taught me to keep a closer eye on my luggage and ensure that I have adequate travel insurance that covers theft.

Similarly, when I was on a flight from Singapore to Dubai, a baby decided to puke all over my T-Shirt. From that, I learned to bring a spare change of clothes in my carry-on luggage.

You get the idea. Adversity can teach you to adapt, become stronger, and plan for the future. When you’re prepared for the worst-case scenario in any given moment, you’ll naturally feel less worried.

So put yourself in more of those teachable moments by traveling around the world. Because although a situation may be uncomfortable, you’ll quickly develop emotional resilience as a result.

You’ll Be In Control Of Your Decisions.

Where to go, what to do, what to eat. These are the decisions that shape the trajectory of each day. You can either make positive choices that benefit your future self and create an incredibly happy life. Alternatively, you can spend your entire budget on a night out, and make many other decisions that you will later regret.

The choice is yours.

So if you want to become more confident & independent, traveling the world is a great place to start. Because when you’re forced to choose between fun and survival, you prioritize the aspects of life that genuinely matter. In other words, you learn to take responsibility for your actions.

You’ll Be Forced To Speak To New People.

I grew up with anxiety. So as you can imagine, talking to strangers in a foreign country isn’t something that came naturally to me.

When you’re traveling around the world, you’re forced to speak to new people, instead of continually hiding away in your bedroom. For example, you might need to ask locals for directions or talk to someone at the local grocery store.

Chances are, you’re not going to have incredibly meaningful conversations with everyone you meet. But if you can make small steps towards overcoming any feelings of anxiety, your confidence will undoubtedly improve as a result. In the words of Richelle Goodrich:

“Small steps may appear unimpressive, but don’t be deceived. They are the means by which perspectives are subtly altered, mountains are gradually scaled, and lives are drastically changed.”

Over the past few years, I’ve visited multiple continents and lived in several countries around the globe. But I’ve learned that traveling the world is a great way to explore the concept of who you are and the type of person that you want to be.

So if you want to change your life, you must first change both your environment and your way of thinking. You need to get out of your comfort zone and see things from an entirely different perspective. Do that, and every aspect of your life will improve for the better.

Starting now.
