How To Connect With Social Media Influencers…

If you’re reading this blog post, there’s a very good chance that you know who I am, or the kinda stuff that I get up to. And so like everything else on my Medium blog, this is an informal guide on connecting with influencers to help grow your business/career.

Finding the influencer.

Every single day, I get asked multiple questions by people on how to find influencers within their niche. Granted, there’s multiple ways in which you can go about doing this — I’m not an idiot. However, the strategy that works for me is starting the journey within Instagram.

Let’s say you’re an airline (as an example) looking to find influencers within New Zealand to help promote flights. The first thing that I would suggest doing is going to the search function, and typing popular hashtags related to your target niche. eg. #TravelNewZealand, #NewZealandGuide etc.

As you can see from this screenshot, Instagram has shown the Top 9 Posts within that tag.

Take a look at the profiles within this section, and get in contact with them if you would like to potentially work together.

Note: You can also do this with “places” within instagram if you want to target a location.

Connecting With The Influencer.

Send them a direct message, or an email, which basically states the following:

  • Who you are
  • What you can do for them
  • What you want them to do

It’s worth mentioning that there’s no point writing a massive essay due to the fact that they probably won’t read it all if it’s too long. So keep it relatively short if you can. Here’s an example that i’ve created that has a template for you to follow. All you have to do is adapt it to your industry!

“Hey (insert influencer name), How are you? I’m one of the people at (insert airline name).

We’d like to potentially collaborate with you, and offer you a few free flights around Asia, in exchange for you documenting your experience on your instagram story/and a couple of posts if you’d be interested?

Talk soon!

The Breakdown

Bare in mind that was simply an introduction, and so as the conversation deepens, you’d be able to discuss details a lot more. But why was this a decent message?

  • It’s short and gets straight to the point.
  • It’s positioned as offering them value. (we would love to give you).
  • A leading question to help enable their response.

My suggestion is to contact around 40–50 influencers within your niche due to the fact that most won’t reply. But don’t worry… that’s totally normal!
