4 Ways To Travel The World With No Money
Visiting beautiful destinations doesn’t have to be expensive.
When scrolling through Instagram, it’s common to believe that travel is a costly activity that you’ll never be able to afford.
Right? It’s easy for you to become captivated by private islands & luxury yachts, so you don’t even consider the possibility of traveling the world.
But what if you could travel without having to obliterate your bank account?
Imagine how beautiful life would be.
Over the past few years, I’ve been lucky enough to visit four continents without having to spend thousands of dollars per month on accommodation to survive.
I’ve learned that traveling the world doesn’t have to be an expensive activity reserved only for the wealthy among us. Instead, it can be incredibly affordable if you’re willing to be savvy about how you spend your money.
Below are several ways that I managed to travel to 21 countries on an extremely tight budget (or free). Each one taught me invaluable life lessons, budgeting skills, and massively improved my confidence in social situations around the globe. I’m sure they will do the same for you, too.
Accommodation is one of the highest costs that anyone has to face when traveling the world. Whether it’s for a few nights or several weeks, the prices of getting a decent hotel can easily total into the thousands of dollars.
Understandably, this factor alone prevents many people from visiting a new destination.
While traveling around the USA, CouchSurfing was an incredibly useful tool as I was receiving free accommodation with a local.
Often sleeping on the sofa or in a spare bedroom for a couple of nights, it was a great way of saving money while simultaneously making new friends.
So if you’re on a tight budget while visiting new destinations, consider using Couchsurfing so you can experience the city/town like a local, and meet some fantastic new people in the process.
Work For Accommodation.
As many backpackers will already know, staying in hostels is a great way to save money and make new friends while traveling. But if you’re looking to stay in a location for an extended period, working for accommodation is a great way to live rent-free.
Typically, this involves cleaning or reception work for several hours per day in exchange for free accommodation at the hostel. So if it’s something you’d be interested in doing, search for hostels in your desired destination, and contact them asking if they offer work for accommodation.
While visiting the beautiful state of Queensland in Australia, I did this while saving up for a trip to Asia. A typical schedule was working in the mornings and then exploring the rainforest & beaches during the afternoon.
If you’re looking for an affordable way to travel & meet new people, working for accommodation can provide a great way to save money in the process.
Visit Free Attractions.
With some attractions (such as Disney World) often costing hundreds of dollars for a day trip, it’s easy to see why many people consider traveling to be ridiculously expensive. But thankfully, there is an alternative way to explore your favorite destination.
When I arrive in a new city, I’ll often find some free attractions such as museums, beaches, and anything else within the local vicinity. For example, I went to Central Park in New York and took the Staten Island ferry see the Statue of Liberty.
When planning a trip to a new location, take a look at the free (or cheap) attractions that you’ll enjoy. After all, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars per day on sightseeing tickets to enjoy a destination.
Use Free Transportation.
When budgeting for a trip to a new destination, it’s easy to forget how quickly the cost of using Uber (or other rideshare apps) can add up to become incredibly costly.
So when possible, utilize free transport in the downtown area of the city you’re visiting. Eg. Calgary has a “free fare zone” in the central business district for the light rail transit system.
Alternatively, walking is a great way to explore everything that your new destination has to offer.
Traveling the world isn’t impossible. You just need to figure out how to reduce your expenses, so it becomes significantly more affordable.
Like you, I used to dream about visiting exotic locations and traveling to beautiful destinations around the globe. As I figured out how to reduce my cost of traveling, I’m now able to live a life that I once thought to be impossible.
